A lot of advances have been made when it comes to dentistry. Your misaligned teeth can suddenly look like a movie star’s pearls with just a few dentist visits.

Also, in the field of structural engineering, a lot of things have also been made. Bridges made of fiber optic have been proven stronger and lighter compared to the traditional metal and/or iron.

What do these two have in common anyway that it is worth mentioning here? Well, apparently, there is this exceptional structural engineer who came up with another exceptional idea: if these fiber optic materials work so well in bridges, why can’t they work on people’s teeth? The bridge he made is actually 4 times stronger than the traditional dental bridge used by dentists. Can you imagine that?

A lot of people are victims of the dreaded “sensitive teeth” disease. They have been deprived of the good things in life specially those of ice cream, sizzling spare ribs and other foods that are either extra hot or ultra cold. Some even feel pain whenever they try to breathe through their mouths. It is but a natural phenomenon for the enamel of your teeth to get thinner as you get older (since you have been chewing a lot of stuff, I presume), but to those who have sensitive teeth at such a young age, that’s a different story (perhaps, something to do with the things you eat or your habits).

There are hundreds of toothpastes in the market that will help you sooth your sensitive teeth. But if you want a faster solution, you can have your teeth crowned. Through crowning, your teeth can have a brand new coating and so, the insides of your teeth (or the dentin) won’t experience much of a torture anymore.

As mentioned in the previous post, we will first discuss materials used for direct restorations. An amalgam is a mixture of different metals; wherein the primary one used is mercury. As of present, amalgams are 40% mercury and 60% powder of the following combined metals (Silver/Copper/Zinc).

It is truly considered as one of the excellent and versatile restorative material around. Here are the pros of amalgam:

inexpensive;

can pack any irregular volume;

water moisture tolerant;

and lasts more than any direct restorative material;

It is for these reasons that an amalgam is considered as an effective and superior direct restorative material.

We will discuss the dental amalgam controversy in the next post.

Here are the disadvantages of having Cerec restoration treatment:

Not all dentists are experts on Cerec technology, so make sure that the dentist who will perform your restoration for you is indeed a certified Cerec expert.

Cerec crowns come from a single ceramic block so it is a little common to find some difficulty in finding the most apt color gradients of natural teeth. So if you’re deciding to have Cerec restorations made on your front teeth, you might want to think again. Perhaps, opting for Cerec for back teeth is a little more relieving. This is unless your cosmetic dentist is highly skilled in creating natural-looking teeth.

Bonding can also used to close teeth gaps and to reshape and re-align teeth that have little imperfection such as chipping and misalignment.

Another use of tooth bonding is for creating composite fillings. The restorative used in tooth bonding, or the dental composite, is also the material used for making natural tooth-colored fillings. This is a good alternative to silver fillings because the former is less noticeable.

Like any other cosmetic procedure, cosmetic dental treatments also have limited life span yet may have long-term consequences. Teeth that have been bleached do not stay white forever. You may have to come back to your dentist for future treatments but the decision to do so is your prerogative. Good thing that this procedure does not involve structural changes so it becomes optional. On the other hand, having veneers or dental crowns also means regular veneering or dental crown replacement when the originals break or deteriorate. This also applies to dental bonding. It is best to always ask your dentist about long term maintenance.

At-home teeth bleaching is a great option for those on a budget. Unfortunately, results cannot be seen after a single application. It can take from weeks to months before the final results can be achieved. This means that the dental patient must have the time and patience. He or she must also be capable of performing and adhering to the instructions. On the other hand, the results of professional teeth whitening are seen immediately after the procedure but are quite more expensive than at-home products. Professional whitening may be accomplished in one to three appointments.

Dental crowns and Porcelain Veneers are both types of dental restorations. Dental crowns are very strong and are often utilized in rebuilding teeth that are badly broken and decayed due to significant tooth abuse. The downside of this is that it requires tooth reduction and when a crown has been made for a tooth, that particular tooth will always require a dental crown. Porcelain Veneers</strong are also strong but brittle and are usually placed on mostly healthy and intact teeth. Although it requires less tooth reduction, once a veneer has been made, it will also always require veneering. The use of either two however is up to the dentist.
